Mourning the Megastore.

Yesterday while having a quiet, solo dinner at Planet Hollywood in Times Square, I learned that the world famous Virgin Megastore is going out a business. What a sad testament to these rough economic times (not to mention the death of the Cassette Disc). For as long as I can remember, The Virgin Megastore has been the emblematic sign of Times Square. I can remember spending countless hours in the store as an undergrad just roaming through the floors and listening to music. I also remember the days when thousands of fans would line up in front of the megastore for album signings by superstars like Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey.

Another element of the late nineties/early 00s that has now passed on.

wait...what's a cassette disc lol? it's time for virgin megastore to close, just as it was for tower records. those days are over. browsing for records/cassettes/cd's inside a traditional store was a great time waster, but alas, it's time has come and gone. now you do the same thing in your night clothes via itunes or amazon.

NNNOOOOO! That is so sad.

thats terrible

"Everything must change...." Here in Los Angeles, it was the closing of Tower Records. I couldn't tell you how many Friday nights were spent having a late dinner at the Soup Plantation, then heading up to Tower on Sunset and just roaming the isles listening to music. Very sad feeling.

We lost the equally iconic Tower Records at Piccadilly Circus last year too.

Browsinfg online just ain't the same. :(

Yes, this is tragic. The store was actually profitable, but Vornado was after more dollars for the space. Forever 21 will be the new tenant.

Times Square is entering yet another phase beyond porn, beyond Disney to total retail. So Times Square is moving from an entertainment district to a total retail district - that's a shame.
