Alexyss Tylor: "stop suckin dick for snacks." Black gay men have we found an ally or an enemy?

Years of reading Foucault, Deleuze, Crenshaw, Delgado, you name it....none of it prepared me sufficiently to interpret or theorize the magic of Alexyss K. Tylor, the new black "cultural critic" that the world is going crazy over. I dont think i've ever had such an ambivalent visceral reaction to a "public speaker" quite like my experience with Tylor. Quite frankly I dont know if this woman is homophobic, insane, a ghetto black feminist genius, or some fierce combination of all three.

Please watch the clip above and tell me how/why I should take this seriously. Taken from her website alexyssktylorvaginapower.com (which apparently has a huge following) Tylor "warns" urban black gay men about "selling their ass" for married white men. Oh, and yeah, the show is "co-hosted" by Tylor's mother (dont ask). Ultimately Tylor's message is an indictment of white racism, but its criss-crossed with all kinds of other meanderings. Watching the clip I find myself saying "yes sister, preach, preach goddammit!" in one moment, followed by, "oh no she didnt?" in the next. Still there is a wit here, a politically-tinged humor, that I'm not willing to simply dismiss as your typical wanna-be-feminist homophobia. What do you think? Does Alexyss Tylor strangely embody what Jose Esteban Munoz would call a "disidentificatory" politics?

I'm telling you, I need you to take a few minutes and listen to this. I promise, it will probably be one of the strangest...and funniest.... eight minutes of your week.

**Bonus. It gets even better (clip two):

I know you tried to prepare us for this clip. However, I still wasn't ready. The words won't come. I'll try again later.

Frank, you officially have the most ecletic, truly diverse blog in New York City! This shit is fucking hilarious!!!! "Uh, so he's willing suck a dick-up, until he hicup"----LMAO!!! UNBELIEVABLE!

I'm sorry but Miss Thing turns it for me LMAO.I remember the first time I saw her in action a couple months back and I lost it in the office. There are definitely somethings I want to grab her by that ponytail about (like men are natural preditors....natural???) but I think she is preaching with no cut cards, she let us (and yes I said us) have it and if you listen to what she is saying, underneath the vulgarity there is a truth....whew. I live for Mis Alexyss Tylor LMAO

Wow is all i can thank of, lol, is she for real!!!

all I can say is that she is off the hook. Some might laugh at her and just dismiss a great deal of what she is saying as babble or rhetoric but a great deal of what she says is true and makes sense. You have really had my ass in stitches all this week from this clip and then the one of the church fight,I'm about to lose my job over this shit.lmao.

She's a hit in Atlanta (naturally) although I haven't been able to make through more than a couple of her shows.

I have to admit, once you can get past her ghetto cadence and stylized presentation, she drops nuggets of truth that nobody else touches in this format.

She is definitely an "enemy" and specifically a homophobe. It's that black woman rage about "down-low" (and black male homosex in general) men. I'm surprised you think she's so great. Don't support her crap. I didn't find ANYTHING she said funny.

Actually "anonymous," I strongly disagree. As I stated in prefactory comments, I think Alexss Tylor presented a sort of negoitated "folk feminism," which cannot be simply dismissed as "homophobic" even though she does in fact have some of homophobic qualities. It's sort of like how I deal with my mother and/or grandmothers: though some of their rhetoric can be homophobic and/or misguided, a lot of what they have to say is quite "queer friendly" and progressive. I feel the same way about Alexss. Yes, sure, some of the non-sense the says it tinged in a homophobia, however that doesnt mean that I am willing to dismiss her commentary altogether. Like I said, its a negoitation--I approve of some of it, I disapprove of other parts of it, but I still engage all of it. It's not as simple as saying "she's too homophobic" and moving on. What progressive and/or "positive" things can be learn from Tylor (i.e. her powerful critique of class and black respectability politics, her useful interrogation of how lack of self-worth leads to HIV infection, etc. etc.).

Frank,
I personally emailed you a week ago about how much I admire and love your blog. Alexyss Tylor is too much. While she's no bell hooks, a lot of what she says is right on target. Just as with any social critic, we have to be very careful in not simply dismissing their point of view. I feel she has a good deal truthful to say about all relationships, including gay relationships. Besides that, she is sho' nuff hella funny!! LMAO!!

frank, dearest, frank. you have done it again. i found this/these clips to definately be intreaging, however, in true libran fashion, i am on the fence. i would not (yet) call her an enemy. she speaks truth, although one could argue whether or not it is universal. whether or not ms. tylor is an enemy is truely subjective. one could argue that maybe her "friend" is gay and that she has a honest (or healthy) relationship with the gay community. a middle ground view, would be that ms. tylor is often (and awfully) adamant on using blanket statement. one if not my biggest pet peeve when it comes to "community leaders". however, (and this just may be bias) there are parts of her speach and certain syntax used in her commentary that exposes her homophobia, if not disapproval. speaking in blanket statements is only one of those examples. speaking purely from intuition, ms tylor is (or is on her way) to the mentallity of a 5%er, if not a hybrid of that and military feminism. to short change my quarter to $.15, ms. tylor strikes me as the type to freely judge people no matter who they are and quite possibly uses the "F-bomb" as much as 50 uses the "N-bomb". ya-mea??

Ms. Tylor is not scared of much and it certainly is not homos. If we only had more black women who could speak as openly and directly about sexuality and human behavior in all its complexities our communities would be healthier. I like Frank's word "negotiate" to describe how I deal with Alexyss. There is a lot of deliciousness along with some fat and gristle in her rhetoric. I just suck all the savory juices out and leave the rest. Her diatribe against the Black middle class gurls who can't get past her profanity and speech patterns to deal with her message is classic. She displays a vulnerability in that clip that surprises and endears.

To gain a broader understanding of her ideas I'd recommened that you listen to her interview on MetaCreative Radio and ofcourse YouTube.

What's interesting (and entertaining) is the blunt tone and language she uses. Also the fact that she discusses sexuality in this tone, specifically the fact that some people are "skilled" in bed and can use this to play power games and manipulate others....Sex in the city ain't got nothin on her...Her clips, (for those who can "negotiate" them) are recreational, she's not educated enough to effectively help with sexual health pratical level. She's not fully acquainted with an understanding of HIV/Aids policy or statics etc

As for her use of the word "natural", she really needs to realise that gender is a social construct...
