zadie smith & toure this week...
New York City's downtown scene has always been a mecca of artsy, literary and popular culture. It's one of the reasons i've stayed in New York as long as I have. Two readings/writings I recommend this week.*
First, tonight (Wednesday) my buddy (and one my favorite black bohemian brooklyn boys) Touré reads from his witty and impressive debut novel Soul City as apart of the The 10th Anniversary Celebration of Picador at Cooper Union. The event will be at will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 at The Cooper Union, The Great Hall, 7 E. 7th St. (at 3rd Ave.) in the East Village. Author Tom Wolfe will also be on board.
*
On Sunday, one of my favorite Black British writers--the amazingly young and talented Zadie Smith, (she published her tour-de-force debut White Teeth at 24!) reads from her brand new novel On Beauty. Smith will be signing copies of her book at 2 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Barnes & Noble, Union Square 33 E. 17th St. in NYC.
*
Of course, I'll be at both events.

Touré at Cooper Union tonight at 6:30

Loved "Soul City" by Toure. Met him at Book Expo America. Would love to hear him read and talk about "Soul City."
