experience the magic again....
Anyone who's ever been to my duplex knows that i'm a huge Ailey fan. I have two large, gorgeous Alvin Ailey posters hanging in my hallway on the second floor separating my bedroom from my roommate. Those that know me even better know that several of my previous relationships with Ailey boys have resulted in my special admiration and appreciation of the extraordinary artistic talent of the company's junior and senior members.

Way, way, back, in my life before becoming a young academic, I attended Fiorella Laguardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts (the high school most often remembered for its role in the film/tv series "Fame") as a dance major with the hopes of one day dancing for the company. Though I left my dance shoes behind long ago (I stayed at Laguardia for less than a semester), each time I see the curtain rise on an Ailey performance I'm reminded of my years as a young teenager (coming to terms with his sexuality) who lived and loved the world of modern black dance.

This Tuesday tickets officially open for Ailey's 2005-2006 Season. The season promises to be as fantastic as ever. It includes world premieres of Artistic Director Judith Jamison's Reminiscin', Ronald K. Brown's Ife as well as Acceptance In Surrender by company members Hope Boykin, Abdur-Rahim Jackson and Matthew Rushing. And of course, as always, Revelations will be performed (this number will simply never grow old). The simple yet vibrant costumes. The meticulous leaps and pirouettes. The swelling musical choruses. The boys with the big booties. Lol. The holidays would just not be the same if it wasnt for Ailey.

Ticket prices vary from performance to performance, but regardless there are always great student and employee discounts available from various sources. Last year I went to see six Ailey performances, and most of the time I only paid about $10. I cant imagine why this year would be any different.
