Wait a minute...did anyone actually go see El Cantante?

Its hard to believe that one of Hollywood's hottest couples could make a movie together and have it receive virtually no press, but thats exactly what seems to have happened to JLO and Mark Anthony's El Cantante.

Today, while I was trying to figure out which films this year have been "Oscar worthy" I wondered when El Cantante would finally be released. I eagerly anticipated Anthony's portrayal of salsa sensation Héctor Lavoe, the Nuyorican music legend who died of AIDS-related complications in 1993. Then I realized something: the film had actually was released in August! Oops.

In terms of reviews, the L.A. Times, USA Today, and Variety Weekly all pretty much said the same thing: Mark Anthony was stellar but the film suffered overall from JLO's lukewarm performance. But I don't trust the critics. Did anyone out there actually see this film ? I'd be interested in hearing what you thought of it.

Unfortunately I cant find a single theater in the New York area that is still showing El Cantante. Still, just based on the film's trailer, I'm mesmerized by what seems like could have been an extraordinary performance by Anthony.

How was it?

Could Jennifer Lopez honestly offer an Oscar-worthy performance when she doesn't play an Oscar-worthy character?

I don't trust film critics . I'm sure these are the same people who gave "Lake Placid" a C+.

I meant to see it, but didnt. I think they're both great actors, but he (Anthony-Lopez) has the better chords.

btw have u read this

I saw the film during the Latino Fim Festival this past summer. Jennifer was o.k. in that her job was basically to play a sassy, feisty nuyorican (no real stretch there.) Marc was good in that he definitely has the vocal chops to play the legendary Mr. Lavoe. However, I left the theater feeling like the script didn't really do this man's life justice.

The project, as a whole, seemed more like it was a labor of love for the "The Anthonys" in that "El Cantante" was pretty much made for people who are already familiar with Lavoe's music.

I saw it. For the type of film it was, I enjoyed it. I mean she was playing a person who is not famous, so I have nothing to compare it to.

One thing I can say is the music was excellent and the story was believable.

The story was told from "Pucchi's" perspective so it was basically her view of Hecter Lavoe

I am sure other people have other opinions of his life.

Marc Anthony was excellent. The character was totally believable.

Chile, I wish I would....if Jenny is in it, that's almost a good indicator of whether or not to wait for it on DVD. But I promise you, when it does, it will be in my queue on blockbuster.com

I saw it. It inspired me to look into salsa music. I thought the movie was great. I didn't know anything about the music or the man. It was a real eye-opener. I think in certain aspects, JLo overdid it. But, the emotional parts, I liked. Overall, it was worth the $11.
