Ghosts of Cite Soleil opens today in the Village

" This aint no Hollywood film": Ghosts tells the story of life in the Haitian ghetto

Today the widely controversial documentary film Ghosts of Cite Soleil opens at the Independent Film Center in Greenwich Village for a special two week engagement. Black critics are divided: everyone seems to agree that the film's gritty, urban aesthetics are quite gorgeous, while its representation of the Haitian underground is potentially problematic. I wonder what Ed Guerrerro thinks?

The documentary, which bears a thematic resemblance to City of God, takes viewers into the "dangerous slums of Cité Soleil in Haiti where gang leaders rule the daily lives of families living there. Two of these gangsters are also both brothers and aspiring rap stars. Yet, they both battle each other for control of the streets and for the love of the same woman." The score is by Wyclef Jean.
