Notes on Beyonce's 8 New Videos

Alas, i've finally gotten a hold of the full versions (no, not 10 second clips, complete versions) of the videos from Beyonce's B-Day re-release. After careful review, im convinced that all of these videos were shot over the course of one weekend on a half-priced soundstage somewhere in the ghetto. A complete mess.

First, here's a look at the final version of Beyonce's soon-to-be-released "Get Me Bodied" video featuring Solange and Kelly Rowlands:

GET ME BODIED

*Yawn* The choreography looks cheap, Beyonce looks dusted, and the set design is a hot mess. And what a shame. Musically, "Get Me Bodied" is actually one of the best pop-ghetto dance tunes of the year, but this video just doesnt do the song justice. I was expecting F. Gary Gray video quality, instead this is giving me student-demo teas.

One chop.

Ironically, "Freakum Dress", a far less "catchy" tune than "Get Me Bodied", has a much better video:

FREAKUM DRESS:

Ok, I think Beyonce made this one for "the kids." Please tell me you got into the two black queens with makeup at the beginning. And did you peep Miss Danielle Ninja as one of the lead backup dancers? Danielle's one of the newest performance divas from New York's ballroom scene. Some of you might remember her from her nasty voguing battle with Leyomi Mizrahi at Club Escuelita a months ago, or her showstopping appearance with Janet Jackson at last year's House of Latex Ball. Cute video. I can hear "the girls" now referring to tight jeans as "freakum" dresses.

Ok, then we have:
GREENLIGHT:

Ok, now I will admit: this video is hot, by far the best in the entire bunch. Beyonce is SITTING!!!! And yes, the video is clearly an ode to Robert Palmer's iconic 1985 music video Addicted to Love. I'm absolutely in love with this one.

SUGA MAMA:

Visually, the video is clearly another ode to 1980s music-video aesthetics: cloudy gray tones, tacky silver strobe lights, but great solo choreography.

KITTY KAT:

Uhm, to borrow a phrase from the song's chorus: "I'm not feeling it, I'm not feeling it..." Sorry B.

And of course, most of you have already seen:

BEAUTIFUL LIAR

AND
UPGRADE YOU:

I mean---I guess. But something about this still seems tacky.

Hmm. I wonder what Daphne Brooks would have to say? Are you feeling any these videos?

Regardless of what you think, one thing is for sure. Beyonce's impact on little black boys across the country is undeniable. The proof below (the infamous clip):

(and YES, for the record, I am an advocate of nine year old boys singing "Irreplaceable"!):

Ok, Beyonce is widely become the most seriously discussed pop figure of her day. I don't like the "get me bodied" video. i don't understand the song and i feel cheated with the hijinks at the end.

As for the "Upgrade You" video, as much as I found a new, hmm, appreciation for beyonce with the "check up on it" video, i can't stand being a voyeur in their relationship. we will never see a beyonce/jigga sex tape because they're providing soft core ones for mass consumption.

interesting... at least some but not enough for me to repurchase her CD next month....

oh wait i got a burned copy of the first release of B'Day.

that kitschy, "nouvelle vague" clip in "Bodied" is ridic... that heffa said, "It's B!" I'm dead!

well im glad i saw the get me bodied video, i was like i know beyonce not dipping and to my relief its Danielle Ninja. well work for ur people bitch... i see it!

I do like the Get Me Bodied video...its based off the Rich Man's Frug from Sweet Charity. The costumes and everything. Go to youtube to peep the original.

50 cent released a video anthology with his last cd. I don't think many artist will have high quality videos for every song when they go that route. I did like the Freakum dress video.

Alot of the "children" will like the videos :-)

there was an interesting discussion about the 9 year old boy on Marc Lamont Hill's blog. I didn't have time to comment there, but I TOO am all for 9 yr old boy's performing "Irreplaceable." He worked for the up and coming legendary children...lol. But nah, seriously, if more youth were encouraged to be who they are there would be less therapists in business... although I am oversimplifying this grossly right now on 3 hours of sleep.lol.

Indeed, this is a pleasant treat on your site Frank. Without defaulting to any assumption about his sexuality, I love how he totally disrupts gender norms while unconsciously doing so. Clearly, this young man doesn't care about the words--does not find the text important whatsoevah--but is captivated by the essence and possibility of performance. Here, performance for this young man (while it may be ready queerly, as in gayly) is only queer in that it destabilizes our idea of what it is that young, 9 year boys are listening to as they develop a sense of themselves and their pre-pubescent identities. I celebrate this performance, in all of its ambivalence. Fabulous!!!!

i think she's doing the madonna "sex book" thing where the world already keep saying she's pretty, but she's like okay, i will just be pretty. I will be so pretty you can't stand it. then after you get sick of it, maybe you will see me as an artist.

also, the money they give to artists for music videos, when they could do 8 in one and then give the extra money to charity, that's also an issue to think about. so waht if it's small production!!!! you don't have to overpay hairstylists, make-up artists, stop being so damn capitialistic. She's giving kids a chance to be in the fucking industry. are you saying she needs fluff to hide that she's not talented? I think we should be in the stage of anti-michael jackson over the bleeping top video. i saw on the news kids robbing a cop for a northface jacket. A cop! And there are no black people on the northface jacket ads or creative production team. i have a lot of creative black gay designers out of work, thinking about chaing their names to somethign more white sounding so they can sell like Hilfiger or Bill Blass. If you go low production, you can give more of the kids in the scene a job. It will go on thier resumes. They might actually have a future. She hires so many kids in the industry. I can't understand why kids like Clay Cane and you hate on her. Maybe because you will have your NYU degree. And trust me, i don't hate on that, i have several degress. But i also understand the hustle and the kids i grew with, and how years from now, those kids in the ball scene will just be social work for you. Is it for the attention?

beyonce is a big topic now, which is good, it shows those who actually have something to say, orginally, or just bullying pop culture for a comment.

interesting, Frank, for a person who is so into ball culture i would think would get those who surrond beyonce the most, i.e. those kids who don't need the "Big" productions to be fabulous. It's about the perfomance. It's about the drama.

Maybe she's sending a message. i'm kind of disappointed in black gay youth, considering, are we just materialistic now. Is it just about the college we go to; the proper grammar we use, is it just about the big director you get to do your music video. When does it mean anything? I'm only 30 years old, but black gay culture used to be about our creativity. It used to be about those queens who went to fabric store to make sure nobody had on their outfit. It's so different now. You can buy black gay culture now. It's for sale.

It's no longer independent. It's no longer original. I could read what you had to say on Perez Hilton. I only commented because I thought you were better. I thought you were original. Maybe we all have our weak moments. Be you.

I think that is Jonte in her Freakum Dress and Get Me Bodied video. Here is a link to one of his videos on you tube.

The KIKI was in the Get me Bodied video and she starts saying, "Ladies pat your weaves."

That's going to be the new dance craze to replace the Chicken noodle soup.

Her flaws and all video is cute, but she TOO painted and put together to be trying to appeared flawed. But the lyrics are nice. Ne-Yo again maybe?

(Sorry just had to add.)

The Get Me Bodied video is fire. Period. Particularly the concept, choreography and the Destiny's Child reunion. Solange is really trying to make me like her.

as a whole, videos aren't really that strong. I was expecting a LOT more from Yonce..but, who knows? Maybe she'll scrap them and do better versions...

"Greenlight", and the last few were good..."Freakum Dress" was HOT.

"Get Me Bodied"--a horrid MESS. but, i actually liked it BECAUSE it was such a mess! :)

hope all is well, frank!

Awesome blog!

so what about Beyonce's performances of masculinity (visually and economically)? i don't know what to make of it...(cept that visually its hot and economically ("i can get another you in a minute")it reinscribes heterownership).

the little boy at the end renews my hope in the world. f**k reproduction. because of him we'll last forever.

I thought Dancing was illegal!!

I had no idea there was a gay fraternity or that the ballroom scene was still thriving! I thought it dissappeared like the dance clubs scenario in NYC

Videos are cute. A few of them seem to be a little lazy but Green Light is most def the best of the bunch. I also noticed an ode to Madonna's Human Nature towards the middle of the video. I actually think she mentioned that on VH1.

I feel these days Beyonce are just doing answer tracks/vids to everything. The whole What She Do I Do It Better thing. Dont want to pit her againts other people coz people will say I'm a hater but U know every video there reminds u of something hot by somebody else. Just felt that ever since B-Day came out, she was on a mission to outsing, outcamped, outdance everu one else and become this kind of "I'm The Best, Deal With It" kind of performer. I think to fans it just shows she's a great performer but for someone like me who loves her voice and what she can do with it (that piece with Luther she did..bone melting)..these new feral visuals are lacking something that makes it seems more showy than empowering.

However, that said. I loved the Big Black "Cat" in Kitty Kat. It's so in your face but metaphoric. Dont like the song much and the leopard cat suit is a mess, but Beyonce moving and taking her "big black cat" with her, Priceless. Let see if they'd play that on MTV.
