on Monday: what frank's been up to...
Around campus, preparing for area exam lists and finals...Yours truly has been overwhelmed by the responsibilities of being a full time doctoral candidate. Next week marks the end of what has been an incredibly taxing, earth-shattering, and methodologically enriching semester. I'll be back on Monday to update ya on what's going on in my life, what's up for the summer, and what (and where) i'll be doing this fall.

no offense but these are the BEST pictres i've seen of you in a long time:)
but hope you can keep your head above the water and good luck with everything.
much love

I'm going through undergraduate finals week, so I can't even imagine. I'm writing to wish you good luck on your exams. And, I'm look forward to your update. I check this blog at least a couple times a week...incidentally, when I should be writing papers...

No offense, but aren't you a doctoral student, and not a candidate?

No, I am a candidate for the doctoral degree. I assume you are referring to ABD status "All But Dissertation", where doctoral "students" advance to official "candidacy", however in the academy (at least as I have experienced it) all Ph.D. students are honored with the "Ph.D. candidate" title.

yeah not belabor the issue, but ive never heard the title phd candidate attach to anyone who wasn't ABD. But maybe that's common practice at NYU. I know some schools make a big stink out of students who label themselves phd candidate and they have yet to propose.
Anyway. Good luck with the program!

thanks, and no problem. And no, this is not specific to NYU at all. I have countless friends in Ph.D. programs across the country rather Yale to Duke to Illinois; Berkeley, etc. etc. And each of them are referred to as "PH.D. Candidates" at all official events. (regardless of whether or not they have advanced to the dissertation phases). Its no big deal, but if you need clarity simply refer to the programs of any of the major national academic conferences such as ASA's or MLA's---you'll see first and second year Ph.D. students referred to as "Ph.D. candidates."
