Jury reaches GUILTY decision in Dwan Prince beating
Steve Pomie will serve a minumum of 12 1/2 years for the near fatal beating of Dwan Prince
The New York Daily News reports today that 22 year old ex-convict and reputed Brooklyn gang member Steve Pomie has been found guilty for the now infamous and brutal beating of Dwan Prince, a 28 year old black gay man who was nearly stomped to death on June 5th, 2005. Pomie, usually the "tough" guy roughneck, began to cry after the jury returned its decision. Because the jury found that the assault violated hate crime statutes, under state law Pomie will have to serve at least a 12 1/2 years. He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years. Regardless of the decision, Dwan Prince's life will never be the same. Once a construction worker and champion jogger, Prince is now paralyzed on the left side of his body and cannot control trembling his limbs from permanent nerve damage.
Regardless of Pomie's fate, Dwan (above left) will never be the same. He now depends on his mother Valerie Prince to help him with his permanent nerve injuries. In his comments to the Daily News published this morning he is quoted as saying "I still feel scared. I dont know if there are still guys out there."

Frank, thank you so much for breaking this story. You are the only black gay blogger that really tries to balance social things with real politics and commentary. Why is that none of the other major blogger kings have mentioned the jury's decision? Could it be that they're too busy reporting on "The Village People" and Brokeback Mountain? (check out the latest posts on some of your colleagues).

But thank you for posting this Frank. I think you know (as does everyone else) that you are a well versed blogger and that all the other bloggers do different things so there is no comparison really-we, I enjoy all of the blogging kids.
As for the crying bitch who decided to gay bash, he's gonna have a new asshole by his time is served.

Thanks for this post. I hadn't heard anything of this incident. I need to watch more television and begin picking up the paper, but there's so much music to be learned. Anonymous 1, have you been reading Larry Lyons' blog amongst other bloggers? If so, you'd know that, as Anonymous 2 stated, the bloggers have different issues they address. However, activism and making other socially aware seems to be a common thread. I applaud them all.

I am an artist based in manchester UK who has just visited New York, I plant pansies at the scenes of gay hate crimes and have planted a pansy as close as possible to the scene of this and other crimes then posted them on my website: www.thepansyproject.com. My aim is to make a subtle gesture that highlights the continuing threat to gay experience. My thought are with Dwan Prince and his family.
