weekend blizzard 2006...around the house

Surprise snow storms are seriously one of my favorite things about living in New York City. There's nothing like chilling around the house doing nothing, drinking coffee and hot-chocolate, listening to music and reading books (in that order) while the snow falls down outside.

For the next three weekends I'm gone from New York City. This weekend I fly to Washington, D.C. to cover the much anticipated Nostalgia Ball (hosted by Derrick Allure, Twain Miyake-Mugler, and Kai Balenciaga) for FlavaLife Magazine. Darryl is coming up from Chicago to stay with me for the week too. It should be fun.

Next weekend i'll be in Chicago for FlavaLife covering the Midwest Awards Ball hosted by Mother Milan Blahnik. The following weekend i'll be back in Chicago, but for academic purposes: i'll be visiting the department of African American Studies at Northwestern University. The department has just invited me to move to Chicago on a fully funded five-year predoctoral fellowship. The program's faculty includes a "who's who" roster of fantastic black literary and cultural studies scholars, with a strong emphasis on queer theory, from Dwight McBride, Jennifer Brody, E. Patrick Johnson, Sharon Holland (as of the fall), to John Keene, Sandra Richards, and Darlene Clark Hine. This is a period of tremendous pressure for me in terms of whether or not I will stay with my absoultely wonderful colleagues and mentors here at NYU or move elsewhere. I've never been quite so uncertain about what's "best" for me. My mentors Jose and Tavia have been such strong advocates for my growth and development since day one, i'm working closely with them through my decision.

In the meantime though, for today im just lounging around the house enjoying the cold weather...isnt this weather the greatest?

I wish I were there.....I think I would like that weather as well. I am sure with my luck that when I come two weekends from now there will be no snow fall at all....

....but on another note....I like your set up of your bedroom. It says alot about you and your tastes....also seems cozy!

Hey, I live in the Chi and I have never been to a ball before. What's the location of the one you're going to next weekend? I'd luv to come check it out.

That is exactly what I did all day Sunday: drink tea and read. But as great as relaxing is while it snows outside, my dear Frank, all that muddy snow doesn't do much for the city afterwards. Anyway, I imagine (not really) continuing your Ph.D stdies somewhere else is a hard decision to make, but at least you got the options to do so; which is what counts.

Congratulations on being accepted to be one of the "whos who" in Chicago. Im sure whatever program you choose will be the right one for you. You never cease to amaze me. Keep doing the damn thing.

Congrats on the invitation from Northwestern and good luck if you decide to take it up...
