'the out crowd'--queer hip hop comes out the closet

The new issue of URB Magazine features an exciting piece on the new documentary film Pick Up the Mic which deals with the underground queer hip hop movement. The documentary, directed by indie filmmaker Alex Hinton, profiles the rise of queer hip-hop from artists like Katastrophe to the music of the (in)famous Bay Area hip-hop group Deep Dickollective. Pick Up the Mic is the first full feature-length documentary from Hinton, who earlier focused on the gay punk scene in his film Queercore.

How familiar are you with the queer hip hop scene? What types of political interventions does this movement make, in a moment with hip-hop homophobia is still at an all time high? Check it out....

Interesting...

The time is now....

Frank, thanks for the heads up. I met Juba Kalamka when he came through Providence about 4 years ago, and also know Tim'm and others involved in the DDC, so it's cool to see that this movement they helped to pioneer is getting more play.

What ever happened to Caushan (sp?)

I agree this is a very interesting post... even though there are closeted gay rappers in the public eye..I do wonder what would happen if there was one that was open and still sold 6 million cd's...hmmmm?
