“ we share love like a blade of corn. Like a honey-bee. Like a waterfall, all apart of me. Like the color purple, where the wind come from….now my eyes are open, look what god has done.”
-lyrics, "The Color Purple" (sung by Celie, listen to it here) *
My friends and I always joke that 'The Color Purple' is the "blackess" film every made (shhh...ignore the fact that Steven Speilberg directed it). I dont think that I've ever met an African American that has not at least seen the film. Honestly, i've never met a black person that couldnt recite at least three of four lines from the movie or do that legendary crooked-hand-sign/finger thing that Celie does at the end of the movie.
*
I've just finished listening to three tracks from the forthcoming Oprah Winfrey produced Broadway version of 'CP' (something doesnt seem right about this abbreviation), and I have to say I'm impressed. I'm legitimately excited to this show. The Atlanta run of the show only got lukewarm reviews, but I here this Broadway version is fantastic.

The lyrics of the title track "The Color Purple" are absolutely beautiful and Elisabeth Withers' performance as Shug Avery reminds me that the (film) role was initially offered to Tina Turner. Withers' showstopper "Push The Button" sounds like a young Turner. Listen to it here (cant you imagine Jenifer Lewis singing this??). *
Now that I think about it, it would be hot to see Tina Turner play Shug on Broadway. I'd also like to see Audra McDonald as Nettie (perfect for her) Heather Headley as Celie (can you imagine Audra and Heather on stage together again?) or even Jasmine Guy as Shug. And I DEFINITELY could imagine the legendary JENIFER LEWIS as Shug. Anyone else that comes to mind for one of the roles?
always refreshing to see an all black cast on Broadway
*
Nettie & Celie embrace during the beautiful title ballad "The Color Purple" (listen to them in "What About Love" here)
The demure and beautiful Renee Elise Goldsberry as Nettie, Celie's loving sister
Elisabeth Withers' (Shug Avery) spicy act 1 showstopper "Push The Button" reminds audiences of a young Tina Turner. Listen to "Push The Button" here.

So what's your favorite Color Purple moment?
mine include:
"You told Harpo to Beat me!" (Sofia to Celie) (yes, its terrible that I love this line).
"You sho' is UGLY!" (shug to celie).
me and you must never part, makidada (shug and celie)
Oprah Winfrey slapping the shit out of Rae Dawn Chong.
favorite moments:
When Shug hugs her father in the church and she says "see daddy, God loves sinners to."
When Celie proclaims to Mister (with her arms out) "what ever you done to me, I already done to you."
I can go on and on! That's my favorite movie!
But, I have one more.
The last scene, when Celie meets her children. And the son says, "Mama, Mama boknee..."
I swear to goodness, I'm in tears every time! It's the dork in me, LOL!

"She say she write. She say nothing but death'll keep her from it. Maybe she dead."
This is the most touching line that Celie delivers in the movie. The moment shows honesty & vulnerability. Whoopi nailed this moment as an actress!

my favorite Color Purple Moment is when Shug as at the Juke Joint and can hear the singing from the Church then she starts singing "Speak Lawd" and then the entire Juke Joint follows her to the Church and everybody is singing "God is tryin to tell you somethin, right now" and Shug says "see daddy, sinners got soul too" and they hug. I love that part.

Ummm let's see...
This is hard because they all are so good, but I would have to say that one is when Mister tried to rape Nettie in the words, and they go into the bushes, and Nettie comes out swinging her books in hand! She got him good! I used to tie up my books to a belt and start swinging! lol
I think the saddest moment to me was when you see Sophia in the jail cell, and you see her eye, ohh man, I get teary eyed everytime.
The happiest moment is when Shug says to her father after her beautiful song...
"See Daddy, sinners have souls too."
and her father gives her a hug... LOVE IT!

Favorite moments
When Celie and Nettie play that hand game.
When Sophia is at the dinner table yeling," Oh yeah, Sophia's back". Then grabs a turkey leg.
When Shug sings Celie that song. "This song is for Ms. Celie, for scratching my head when I was ailing".
When Celie sticks out her tongue at the women gossiping about her.
Celies' husband father on the porch," Yous' a good woman Celie, ain't too many women let their husbands whore stay in their house."
When Celie sees the white woman with her baby," I just know that's my baby."
When Celie's children come running to her," Mama".
So many lines... such a long movie... so much to choose from.

the empty rocking chair when mister is about to explode the stove and celie knows it. that and when celie finds the letters.
as far as possibles for the musical, i agree jasmine guy would be great. she's underrated. and how about frenchie davis, though she may be too young. i'd like to see phylicia rashad too (great in into the woods). or any of the 3 dynamites from the original cast of hairspray.

Wow I have seen this movie too many times to recall. One the scenes that sticks out to me is when Sophia is talking to Celie and she says:
Sat in that jail, I sat in that jail til I felt like I's bout to rot to death. I know what it like to wanna go somewhere and can't. I know what it like to wanna sing... and have it beat out 'ya. I want to thank you, Miss Celie, fo everything you done for me. I 'members that day in the store with Miss Millie - I's feelin' real down. I's feelin' mighty low. And when I seen you - I knows theres a God. I knows theres a God.

Alright for knowing these verbatim !!!!!
I like when Celie was on the train going to her father's funeral and she had on that ostrich
When Mister's father came and was reading the hell out of Mister and said " They say she got that nasty woman's disease."
When Celie spit in the water glass then after said, " Maybe next time i'll put in some of miss shug avery's pee and see how he likes that." Now some peoples of mine always say when they drinking a good cocktail " mmmmmm this must have some shug avery pee in it. "
I saw them sing the title track on the Black Movie Awards...it was phenomenal.

Shug: "Get that thing to fix me some breakfast."
Mister (to Harpo and Sophia): It sure is nice to see you two together again.
Old Mister (to Mister): Boy, you can vouch for nothin'. Shug Avery done set the population of Hartwell county a new high... and I hear she's got that nasty women's disease.
Miss Millie: "I've always been good toyou people."
Old Mister: "Maybe she can sweep out the caboose."
Mister to Grady: "You had her your way, I had her mine, but we had her."
the list goes on and on and on...
This is my favorite movie of all time, and I owe my love of reading to Alice Walker.

Hello! I am from Brazil, looking for the Color Purple song lyrics from Broadway version...so we can perform it on a local Musical theater school! Can someone give me a hand on it?
here it goes - fill in the blanks:
"...Just as close as my breath is to me. Rising like a ___
Love has ____ my wings..."
and
"It take a ___ of love to make a mighty tree and then the smallest boy can make a ____
Like a ____ keep the river high.."
Thanks!!
