AFRO-PUNK Festival 2009!!!

It's that time again folks: the 5th annual AFRO-PUNK FESTIVAL is headed back to Brooklyn. Events kick off on June 27th 2009 with a free live screening of "What's On Your Plate" in Fort Greene Park. Films will continue to run at BAM until July 8th , including a whole day in honor of Spike Lee.

The festival is the center of the global Afro-punk community and the definitive destination for audiences looking to experience true Afro-punk culture. Last year 30,000 people attended, and this year even more are expected, along with 40 bands, 24 films, a visual art exhibit and a custom built skate park where you can check out pro riders and skaters from around the country.

From July 4th to July 6th, various afro-punk bands, skaters and BMX take over downtown Brooklyn. A special highlight of the festival will surely be the July 6th “punk park” concert featuring performances by Janelle Monae, Saul Williams, Dallas Austin as well as bands/artists like SHINOBI NINJA, FUNKFACE, Ezra band and the Hot Machine, and TAMAR-KALI.

The festival closes out with a big Block Party on July 12th featuring more live music, djs, fashion, food and local artists.

This will be my first year actually successfully coming to Afropunk, although that stems more from my agreeance with Bad Brains/Living Colour to not support something just because its black, but because it has quality, which has always been sadly missing from a lot of the Afropunk bands (which seem to fill a niche more than rise above it most of the time). But this year has Janelle Monae and I'm been fiending to see that girl live for almost a year now.
