Ashanti to star as Dorothy in "The Wiz." Lord help us all.

Just when we thought that the state of New York City big-budget theater could not get any worst: this happens. I’ve just been told that R&B mini-diva Ashanti has been cast in the powerhouse role of Dorothy in the forthcoming revival of The Wiz, produced by City Center Encores (playing atNew York City Center from June 12-July 5th ). The following clip is from a recent musical showcase where the B-list Pop-Princess previewed her rendition of Dorothy’s signature ballad “Home.”

What type of musical fuckery is this? Is this a joke? You know that Broadway theater has reached a low-point when the vocal capabilities of The Wiz’s leading star rivals that of an ousted American Idol contestant. What do you think?

Hey Frank lets give Ashanti some credit. I mean I don't think it will be that bad and yes I would consider maybe Solange or perhaps Jasmine Sullivan to play the part but hey we can't all have what we want. I love Ashanti and I know she will do well in this role. Whether she was the right pick...I'm sure people are like WTF and is the economy that bad that they had to limit their choices? *Shrugs* lol.

She did play Dorothy in the Muppets version of the Wizard of Oz. I'm not saying that makes this the right choice, LoL, but maybe they considered that.

Ok shes no Stephanie Mills by far and she get tried at the end. but she starts off fine and they seemed to have altered the arrangement a little or it could just be her singing, but take all that away. I think she’ll do fine. And by the way the wiz wasn’t a very good musical in the first place in my view!

We're living in a world that has been relentlessly trained to accept mediocrity and call it good.
I'm with you on this one.

I can't even bring myself to watch the clip! I read about this last month and I was shocked. There were far better choices if they were going to do stunt casting - which this is (Chaka in Color Purple, etc) We can only wish what could have been.

It was okay-not great and damn sholl ain't Stephanie...slightly karokish but not horrible.

"What type of coonish fuckery and niggerdom is this?"

Dead!

But Broadway producers are like Hollywood movie producers. It's all about attaching a "name" to the project to get the masses to buy tickets. People who would otherwise never set foot in a live theater will go to see this because she is in it. Some of them may even be interested in going to see other plays as a result. Who knows, maybe this will have positive benefits in the long run.

As a theatre major, and a big fan and follower of musical theatre, this makes me uppppset. lol.

It's funny that they picked Ashanti out of all of the people they could have picked. She did better then I thought she would have, but in all honesty her acting is terrible, and like someone else said she sounded like she was at a karaoke bar. You cannot have someone like Ashanti follow in the footsteps of the people who have come before her in this role...she's an R&B joke to me...some people may take offense to that, but seriously...what ever happened to the REAL music?! Donny Hathaway, Shirley Murdock, Stevie Wonder, Minnie Ripperton, Rachell Farrell....now it's about the "Good, Good"...come on...

*sigh*...this saddens me. lol

Well, Beyonce played the role of Etta James. So why can't Ashanti play Dorothy?
Diana Ross played Billie Holiday in Lady sings the blues.
Same shit different people.
This happens in the music business.
Lets get Chris Brown to play Ike Turner!

Black consumers need to START SUPPORTING BLACK ARTISTS, instead of acting like "COONS AND NIGGERS"
Ashanti is a positive role model and her music has always been classy.
Unlike some other singers talking about the stereotypical ghetto fab lifestyle and busting windows outta cars.

They should've give the role to Amy Winehouse or Jamie Lynn spears.
Maybe then some of yall uncivilized faggots will have nothing to say because yall treat white artists with more respect that your own people. DISGUSTING!

And all the theatre majors and degree holders lets hear you sing "HOME".

I didnt think so.. people are so quick to judge and everyone thinks theyre so fucking smart.

Have a great day!

P.S tell the person that own this blog to post those pictures of his dick again. That set us back another 500 years. what kinda niggerdom is that?
I loved that story of him topping a r&b singer too.

very educated!

Folks, don't waste your time even responding to the "anonymous" comment.

Lol, You were ruthless

LOL - you're hilarious. BUT um, yea - she does this song NO JUSTICE at all.

what did i miss?

Ms Mills left big/tiny shoes to fill and Ashanti can't carry a melody in a bag across Broadway.

Ashanti--I thought she died in a plane crash, no? I guess not. But think of it this way--she can double as one of the dwarfs. Plus she's a type...a type American can't get enough of. Dwarfish, high-Y, and cute. Think Josephine Baker--hello!

out of all the talented black singers out there we get this...

i had doubts when i first heard she was going to be dorothy but after that clip i have even more.

a friend is watching a preview show this weekend in NY ill be looking forward to hearing what he says.

Saw the dress preview last night. The only disappointment was Orlando Jones everyone else, and yes even Ashanti was fabulous. Ashanti must have been working with the worst producers in music because she actually can sing. Her voice was clear and her tone was great. When singing with the ensemble cast her voice wasn't as strong but overall she was good. Her acting could be a little better but it was a dress rehearsal and what was even a bigger surprise was the standing ovation the cast received something that I'm sure they appreciated in a dress rehearsal.

Thank you! now these Ho's can suck Ashanti's dick
