Hillary gets emotional; tears up while answering question

Now wasn't it just yesterday that I predicted that this year's election would be a battle of emotions, a surplus of affective extremes? Well folks, It just keeps getting "better."

As you've probably heard by now, this morning an uncharacteristically "tender" Senator Hillary Clinton welled up in tears after being an asked a random question by a supporter.

Now forgive me for being an insensitive asshole, but its time to be just a little frank. There's something just a little odd about the political placement of these "tears" especially coming from a woman that showed virtually no emotion during the well publicized impeachment of her husband (not to mention Whitewater).

I know the Democratic nomination is on the line here, but dam. These candidates have taken the "performance of politics" to whole new level. I've been glued to CNN all day and I'm telling you, politics beats any other form of entertainment you can possibly imagine.

Your thoughts?

Witness Clinton's tearful histrionics here.

Comments?

I remember seeing a picture of her during the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal with tears in her eyes (I'm not sure if the tears fell over). I don't think much was made of it beyond the fact that it happened.

I realize she's running for president of the U. S. now, but I don't believe her tears the other day will do her any damage. She still has a shot at the nomination.

I just saw Hillary and the offending "tears" on CNN. The way you and others described it, I thought she broke down and boo-hooed something terrible. Nothing even close to that actually happened. Give me a break.

I had this discussion last night. What's sad I think is the political coverage is the most entertainin thing on TV... Hillary had my dyin laughin with that! And it never got old.

Frank, it's very nice that you FINALLY discovered the 2008 election on your blog, and Barack Obama!, but, please, find your own voice. Hillary Clinton's eyes were teary, maybe she became choked up. This happens when you're operating on 4 hours sleep and campaigning around the clock.

BTW: Obama, George HW Bush and George W Bush, Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Edwards have all been known to shed a tear every now in then or become choked up. It's called being human.

You might not agree with HRC's politics, or, you might be blinded your newfound devotion to Obama. Trust me on this one: The same demonizing that you and Obama supporters are doing to HRC is the same demonizing the Republicans have done to the Clintons. It's foolish to think they will not begin the same hate campaigns against Barck and Michelle.

I suppose that your opening line about me "finally" discussing election politics was an attempt to suggest that somehow this means that I'm disengaged or disillusioned to electoral politics specifically or politics in general.

Sorry baby doll, neither scenario is the case. I've generally reserved this blog for engagements with popular culture ("light hearted") material, more so than the grist of daily political commentary. I've left that for my buddy Keith.

Nonetheless, im keenly aware of the political histories of all of the democratic and republican presidential candidates, and when I vote in the New York primaries on February 5th, i'll know exactly why I'm voting for Obama. Can you say the same?

That's first.

Now secondly, I think you've miscategorized both my "sudden love" for Obama as well as my "attack" on Clinton. However, I will say this: I make no apologies for the care free fun I've poked at Clinton. There was nothing mean spirited about this. The fact of the matter is Clinton's decision to tear up was almost certaintly staged even if it did in fact stem from exhaustion and/or sincerity. Clearly there has been a push for Clinton to "show more emotion" following the media's portrayal of Obama as the "people's" choice.

As a side note, lets be clear on something. Hillary Clinton is still unquestionably the democratic frontrunner in this race as of right now (that might all change tomorrow of course). This construction of Hillary as an innocent, poor little lady that I'm just "picking on" is ridiculous. Hill will be ok, trust.

I chose to call attention to----and yes joke about---Hillary's crying episode because it speaks to the recent theatericality of these political campaigns, a point which I thought was worth highlighting.

If you didn't "enjoy" this post, thats fine, however dont try to construct this as my naive, Obama-blinded critique of HRC. It was a joke. And I stand by it as such.

On a complete side note, black folks' blind devotion to the Clintons (embodied in ridiculous phrases like "Bill Clinton is the first black president" etc.) has always been a mystery to me. Let us not forget that it was the Clintons (Bill, with Hillary enthusiatically behind him) that designed and passed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 which effectively shredded the safety net of welfare. The devastating effects of PRWOR continues to demonize black folks, particularly BLACK WOMEN, in truly inconceivable ways. This is just ONE of MANY Clinton (Bill/Hill) supported initiatives which have resulted in the further political disenfranchisement of African American communities.

But I'm sorry, I guess I'm too "devoted" to Obama to know any better. Give me a fucking break.
