Homophobic Appropriations of Frank's Photography
*Update: As of Monday, February 26th Sandra Rose has removed the images from her site.
Yesterday I was informed that many of my photographs have been circulating around the internet on a variety of sites by "concerned" straight black women.
Yesterday I was informed that many of my photographs have been circulating around the internet on a variety of sites by "concerned" straight black women. One such example is the website of Sandra Rose, who claims to be some sort of African American gossip columnist. Sandra runs a popular "news" blog called sandrarosenews.blogspot.com. She's decided to use my images from balls across the country for her posts "Are They Boys or Girls?" and the deeply problematic "DL Men: Ladies Be Very, Very Scarred."
The dialogue that is taking place on her site is even more problematic. Dozens of visitors have commented on her site with things such as "You Fags Are Nasty" and "This Shit is Disgusting."
If you can stomach it, perhaps you might visit Sandra's site an offer some progressive cultural criticism. I'm sick of playing the hero.

Lipstickalley has a whole thread dedicated to this bull. When will people learn to tend to themselves. Damn!

Wow Frank. Didn't know that was happening. I went over there and expressed my displeasure with her breaking all kinds of blogsphere rules, by cutting and pasting for the purpose of meanspiritedness.
I would have made my page private as well - Though I do agree, it is a happenstance in the hetrosexual world, this whole DL 'issue' - we got so many other fish to fry; we have run OUT of Crisco and are using Sulfur 8.
Please don't stop sharing the fascinating and colorful world of Ballroom with those of us who appreciate it.

Frank some positive may have come out of Sandra posting this information. I had never heard about the ballroom scence prior to reading Sandra post. I would have never found your blog either if it wasn't for her post.

Frank I thought people had to get permission to use photos taken by others. Did Sandra Rose acknowledge you as the photographer of the photos?

you better preach, frank!! i visited and posted a couple of comments on sandra rose's site. the level of straight up ignorance is kind of appauling. the main reason why i posted on her sight was to encourage folks to get their read on, to really educate themselves about HIV transmission among people of color and TO GET OVER THE LET'S-BLAME-THE-DL-BROTHER-FOR-HIV
hype. it's so homophobic and tired. i'll be bookmarking your page.

What? No 'thank you' for bringing increased exposure to your page and introducing new readers to your musings and philosophies? Where's the gratitude?
Thanks for re-posting that article. Very insightful. I can't believe I lost out on all that fabulosity all these years. You should take Ballroom mainstream and get sponsorships. It's truly amazing.
And to GabbanaBriefs: I'll see YOU bright and early in the morning on my site. You know you'll be back! HAHA!

Thanks for drawing my attention to this! I posted comments on her blog as well.
What frustrates me most is the dehumanization of every person in those pictures. Talking about Amiyah Mizah's kneck arms and shoulders as if she is a person without feelings was not excusable to me nor was it funny. People should think about the very real emotional cost of their actions before they act.
I don't know Amiyah personally and don't know how she felt about those comments but my point is neither does Sandra Rose. Does one think I wonder how this person will feel if I say or do this thing? Apparently not.

I view Sandrose's website just about everyday, and to each its own on her view I was excited to see how people express theirselves and I have to girl props, some of the people photoed was working it. And it made me want to find out more about ballroom and hopefully go to an ballroom affair. But on the flip side-some of these men pictured in the photos was too damn fine ooh child I could not take!!!! But overall it exposed me to something that I would like to learn more about!

Wow...I read the comments on http://www.lipstickalley.com/vb/showthread.php? about Amiyah and I was boggled... The all say she wears too much makeup... Maybe she just knows how to wear makeup? Answer-Yes. The only think Amiyah really had a nice amount on was eye shadow and it was done in good taste. I mean she was walking face! And most women don't realize that eyeshadow is supposed to be potent and have strength and colour... Dumb bitches, I was irritated by the jealousy and the shade. The real fish are so much more shady than butch queens...

I am a fan of Sandra's site. I didn't read the comments after she posted "girls or boys" post so I'm not sure what went down.
Anyhoo, without her site I wouldn't have gotten a chance to visit yours. So I thank her for that. I've never heard of the "ballroom" scene at all. And thanks for breaking it down cause I was confused on Houses and such. Very informative. :)
And they can say what they want but Amiyah looked great in those pics. LOL!
