Kelis does ballroom. No, Ballroom does Kelis. No, Kelis does...

Is it just me or does the latest cover of VIBE Vixen look like something taken right out of a ball? When I first saw the cover on newsstands, from a distance I swear I thought the magazine had to be running a story on “club kid karta” (a style of makeup popularized by Jack Mizrahi, a popular ballroom “legend” and emcee here in New York City).
Whoever styled Kelis for this cover clearly got a glimpse of Tempress Miyake Mugler’s “club kid carta” look from the 2005 New York City Awards Ball (check out the bottom row, center image). The ruby red jewel lips, the outrageous lashes, the Betty Boop-style pose with the hands on the face with the lips puckered up. Is this Kelis we're talking about or Mich'elle Allure?
Now, in all fairness, just from my previous life years ago as an undergraduate intern at Sony (yeah, I don’t know what I was going through…) I’m certain that surely VIBE’s fashion editor and art director didn’t actually oversee this particular shoot (more than likely this photograph of Kelis was taken months ago as a part of her press and promotional materials and VIBE simply bought/commissioned the image for this cover) but still. Someone, somewhere, got their hands on a ball tape and went off!

Hi Frank-
First-- Hasn't Kelis's style aways been avant garde? She's been unique since forever so I doubt she needs to bite a ball flyer. Also-- Club Kids have done all the looks that are interpreted in that particular ball category so......wouldn't the category in itself be considered a complete bite off of street punks and Webster Hall ravers from like 10 years ago?
