Brutus wasn't black. Why should we pretend he was, just so that a wonderful actor like Denzel can play a role that wasn't written for him? There are plenty of amazing classic (and future) characters for strong black actors to sink their teeth into without dumbing down historical context. Shakespeare wrote the play for a reason - When we "blackwash" dramatic events in anglo/european history, we miss the chance to illuminate important realities about the ancient world's relationship with Africa (or lack thereof). The suspension of disbelief gets shaky: Do we pretend Rome was actually the capital of Egypt or Ethiopia? Do we pretend that it was possible for an African nobleman to become a member of Italy's elite ruling class during Caesar's era? Or do we pretend that African slavery was an Italian institution and that Brutus' "servitude" was indentured? These kinds of "colorblind" conceits are patronizing to black men. How would we feel if Tom Cruise decided to play Malcolm X just because it was a "meaty role"?
