A fellow Bedstuy Brooklyn girl and close friend, Zenobia Conner, recently interviewed black indie film director James Spooner--the creative wiz behind the new buzz documentary Afro-Punk: The Rock-n-Roll Nigger Experience ---for an upcoming issue of the 'zine cultural style journal I edit at NYU, Brownstone.
This is the second time Brownstone has engaged Spooner's documentary. Last year, Tavia Nyong'o, a professor in my department, wrote a great review of the film called "Punk for Punks" (later printed as "The Danger of Safety") which is available at http://www.nyunews.com/brownstone/identity/6918.html. Afro Punk' has gotten a good deal of attention among academics and every-day punk aficionados alike for the past year and a half.Check out the film's website at www.afropunk.com.
