Introducing Nyle Emerson...

One of the amazing things about teaching at NYU last semester was coming in contact with some of the most talented undergraduate students in the country. Many of my students were grassroots activists, artists, filmmakers, organic intellectuals and just all around cool "kids" (though of course most of them were not much younger than me).

One of my students was Nyle Emerson, a Brooklyn-based Hip Hop and spoken word artist who has been getting lots of positive "buzz" in the past few months. Nyle graduated in May with a Bachelor's degree in Recorded Music from NYU's funky fresh Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music. A Philly born veteran of the New York City Underground, I think he represents the best of what is a newer generation of young rap musicians that are committed to returning to Hip Hop's progressive roots. His original, student-produced video "Let The Beat Build" (below) landed him a surprise spot on Kanye West's website and the popular media site TMZ. Take a look:

This week Nyle made his MTV debut, performing live on the show " It's On with Alexa Chung."

You can keep up with Nyle, and his sure ascension towards superstardom by visiting his website at http://www.nyleraps.com

*Also, check out Nyle's interview in NY Magazine here.

Without my Professor I couldn't drop bombs like hetero-normative and intersectional oppression in conversations to make myself sound smarter than I am. But I also learned helluva lot (like the difference between a butch queen and a butch queen done up in drag).

Thanks Frank

Frank, you are now the protege for the ages sir. I know you are proud and Nyle is making great strives in his music career. "Let The Beat Build was fabolous. Thanks for the post!
